Storm at Frenchman's Rocks, Eyre Peninsula, SA, Australia

Frenchman's Rocks is a nice place near Greenly Beach on the west side of Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, about 40km north from the Coffin Bay National Park on Flinders Highway. I was there looking for a spot that could look good in a cloudy day, but suddenly the weather changed from just cloudy to really stormy. Wind was blowing so strongly that our heavy-loaded 4WD was swinging almost like clothes on a rope. In a few minutes they sky became really dark and wide and layered storm clouds started approaching very fast. It was absolutely stunning view. I jumped out of the car and ran to a cliff edge tuning my camera wile I was running. I’m glad I didn’t fall on rocks. So I was able to make a few standard shots and the panorama. It was a reward for the boring cloudy day.

Great use of an ultra wide lens without distortion of the horizon. The dark cloud formation is absolutely mindblowing against the richly coloured rocky cliffs in the foreground.

I lived there for about 3 years in the early 1980’s, not far from the beach, in a stone ruin that I fixed up, with my partner, at the time. The location was very inspiring for our artworks. One evening I saw an unnatural, bright, stationary light in the sky, directly overhead, that defied comprehension. My friend still uses it as an art studio. Her name is Liz Gloyne. Your photo is amazing.
