Wallace’s Hut at Sunrise, Falls Creek, Victoria, Australia

Wallaces Hut is the oldest of the huts still standing in the Alpine National Park. Originally built in 1889 by the Wallace brothers Arthur, William and Stewart, close to the Bogong High Plains Road just out of Falls Creek, from slabs of snowgum. In the 1930’s its woollybutt roof shingles were replaced by the State Electricity Commission (SEC) when it was taken over as a workers’ hut. Now it serves as a refuge and slice of human history nestled in wild country.

If you want to get there drive out the Bogong High Plains Road from Falls Creek towards Omeo. This road is now sealed, but still closed during winter season (from the first week of June till late September/early October). Follow the road for approximately 7.5 km and park your car at the signed entrance. From there it is an easy graded 750m walk into the hut.

I did evening and morning photo sessions there. In the evening it was absolutely freezing!!! Who said that Australia is a warm country?!? It could be cold here!

PS. I’m sorry for the long silence in the blog. Last two weeks were really busy and I just couldn’t spend enough time for photography or even reading Internet.

Love that orange light! A place that i’ve always wanted to photograph…

Nice… love the warm dappled light. I’m still yet to get a shot of this place that I am happy with.

Thanks guys! Matt, I’m also still not fully happy with this shot. Want to go back some time in spring and spend a few days there catching the light.

Ilya, I’ve taken several shots of Wallaces’ Hut but none as richly coloured as this one. I just love how the lower branch of the tree frames the roofline and draws your attention to the structure. The tree adds some interest but I am still working on its function. I find that a crisp misty morning (all too common at FC) can provide some great photo opportunities.

Very nice use of light and shadow! A delightful photo!

Thanks a lot for comments, guys! Franc, I was actually surprised by the sunrise as I didn’t expect anything good that morning. But trees were like in a flame.
