If you follow me on Twitter you probably already know that my Mac died last Thursday. I suspect there was a huge electricity spike and my surge protector couldn’t handle that. So the power supply unit and the motherboard died at the same time. Had urgently buy a new one and a UPS. Spent weekend installing all software and transferring all data from old disks. (Yes, I’m also always making backups). So it’s all good, but now I’ve got a problem with calibrating my Apple Cinema HD monitor. When I was using Mac OS X 10.5.3 everything was smooth and fine but now under Mac OS X 10.6.6 my monitor calibrating software ColorEyes Display Pro makes a really scary LUT curve for the monitor and it’s changing in time (it’s even after 4 hours of “heating” monitor); while Monaco Optix XR Pro makes a really perfect line. And I used the same DTP-94 colorimeter both times. That’s bizarre. Unfortunately Monaco Optix XR Pro is not so good as it can calibrate only for gamma 2.2 while ColorEyes Display Pro can calibrate for L* gamma which, to my mind, is much better for processing photos.

As for the image above. I shot this photo during last Christmas season in the Grampians National Park in Victoria, Australia. This rock formation previously was called the Jaws of Death. But it was renamed to the Balconies for fear of scaring away international tourists who were superstitious about the names of the places they would visit. Not sure if it was a clever idea. I would probably go the place with some very intriguing (or scary) name rather to a place with some pretty obvious name. Anyway… When I was there it was quite hot and dry but two weeks later a flood made quite a lot of damage in Grampians. Have a look at the photos of flood in Halls Gap (a small town in the heart of the Grampians National Park) made by local photographer Thomas Parkes. The damage is nothing in comparison to what happened in Queensland, but still…
