Hanging Rock is a huge sandstone rock over 100m high near Baltzer Lookout, that has become detached from the main cliff. It has featured in many calendars and climbing photos, and was also the site of the main climbing scene in “The Edge” movie.
To get this picture I had to do a bushwalk at 3 AM at night. Quite interesting experience. Walking in the bush at night is fine as the track is quite easy but the last few meters are very steep with and walking there at night with camera, backpack and tripod is a little bit uncomfortable.
How to get there: Drive west along the Great Western Highway, turn right on to Ridgewell Rd, 800m after the main traffic lights in Blackheath. The right turn is not really noticeable. Follow the dirt road until you reach a locked gate. Park here. Then you need to walk for 3.5km along the fire trail. Best time for photographing it is early in the morning as the light reflected from the main wall highlights the Hanging Rock.
