Craig’s Hut, Alpine National Park, Victoria, Australia

Craig's Hut, Alpine National Park, Victoria, Australia

Craig’s Hut is located on Clear Hills near Mt.Stirling in the Alpine National Park in Victoria, and was built especially for the film “The Man from Snowy River in 1981. It was called Craig’s after the lead actor, Jim Craig (played by Tom Burlinson) and re-used in the sequel. On 11 December 2006 the Craig’s Hut was burnt down by wild fire. Hut has now been rebuilt by volunteers under the guidance of builder Craig Ogier. However Craig Ogier was criticized because the new hut was built with slightly different design from the original one.

If you want to get there then have a look at this guide: Circuit Road – Mt.Stirling. This is probably the best driving guide on that region. Travel from Mansfield along the Mt.Buller Rd towards Mt.Buller. Turn left at the Stirling Rd which begins at the toll gate at Mirimbah. This leads to the Telephone Box Junction – entrance to the Circuit Road. The entrance to the Circuit Road via Stirling Rd is approximately 32 km from Mansfield. Drive along the Circuit Road for about 20 km and then turn right to the Clear Hills Track. The Circuit Road is suitable for 2WD cars but the Clear Hills Track is 4WD track. It’s only 1.2 km long so you can walk to the Craig’s Hut if you do not want to drive on Clear Hills Track. The Circuit Road is closed during snow season – first weekend of June till beginning of November.

And many thanks to Matt Lauder for letting everyone know that the hut was recently rebuilt. There is only one problem with that place – it’s really hard to find a new composition for shooting Craig’s Hut. I’ve found that this hut was already photographed from all best spots.

May 26, 2009 - 4:20 pm Matt Lauder - Happy to help... I had been waiting for it to be rebuilt myself. Nice angle, looks like the snow is still holding off. I think in snow this will be a special place with the right light.

May 26, 2009 - 6:57 pm Ilya Genkin - There was no snow at all - warm and dry. Much warmer than the week before at falls Creek. With very late (?) snow season this year there is no reason to close all these roads on 5th of June. But... I saw a couple of winter shots of this hut at sunset and sunrise - very, very nice. But if the roads will be closed it will be quite difficult to get there - 20km in snow with heavy backpack it's not an easy weekend walk. On other side the Wallace's Hut will be much more easily accessible by foot in winter - only 8km along good road.

May 27, 2009 - 11:58 pm Tom Parkes - It's been up for a while, I think that horizontal light is what is needed to make it really stand out, I still think the footage from the movie gives the best compositions. Ken Duncans composition is not bad, I have seen the movie so many times I believe a bit further back up on the hill making the hut look smaller is best. I must get up there one day. The hut is actually in the Mansfield State Forest and not National Park. It was reopened in January 2008, some say it cost $300,000 to rebuild, but hte builder denied that.

August 17, 2010 - 10:45 am Kim - ..just wanted to say a quick "thank you" for this detailed information and map/GPS. I've wanted to visit Craig's Hut for as long as I can remember. Haven't done so yet, but plans are definately in the works! :)

August 26, 2010 - 1:48 pm Mark Marbani - Is the site accessable by 4WD.? has anyone driven to the hut?

August 27, 2010 - 8:35 pm Ilya Genkin - Hi Mark, the Circuit Road is suitable for 2WD cars but the Clear Hills Track is 4WD track. It’s only 1.2 km long so you can walk to the Craig’s Hut if you do not want to drive on Clear Hills Track. And, yes, you can drive to the hut on 4WD.

June 8, 2011 - 8:30 am Stefan Redford - Great info. Just wondering if there is any way of getting to the hut during the snow season. Wife and I have been during the summer and want to return during winter.

June 8, 2011 - 8:35 am Ilya Genkin - Hi Stefan, truly speaking I don't know. I suspect that during snow season it's accessible only by foot. I'll try to find more info.

October 2, 2011 - 10:26 am eddie lethborg - hi i was just wondering if people can go there for weekends and stay in this magnificent hut i have been there once but many years ago thanks

October 2, 2011 - 12:38 pm Ilya Genkin - Hi Eddie, as far as I understand this hut is for emergency shelter only. But there are places to put a tent outside of the fenced area.
