The Walls of China (Lunette) at Night, Mungo National Park, NSW, Australia

Even ten years ago I couldn’t imagine that. Discussing with parents, who are in 9000km from me, via video chat about Orion constellation position in Northern and Southern skies, search photo archive for a proper photo, develop it, send it to parents, on both ends of the video chat open paper maps of the sky and the photo, identify all stars and constellations, discuss different aspects of stargazing, make a small photo, sign it with Wacom tablet and send again still using the video-chat. Tempus fugit! What will happen in ten years?

Made this shot during my recent trip to the Mungo National Park in NSW outback, Australia. The moonless night sky at a remote location far from any man-made light pollution is amazing! I always want to exclaim: “Oh, My God! It’s full of stars!” And the Australian outback is one of the best places (along with the coast northwest of Perth (Western Australia), the Chilean observatory sites, and isolated places in the US Southwest) to watch the night sky. People who are living in big cities just cannot enjoy the night sky because of the light pollution.

By the way, in November 2008 the National Geographic Magazine published an article about light pollution – “Our Vanishing Night” with great photos from Jim Richardson.

Dodwell Observatory with Moon and Venus in Night Sky, Arkaroola, SA, Australia

My parents were (they are doing well but they retired) professional astronomers and I inherited their love to the night sky. And I’m trying to visit any observatory or large telescope (including radio ones) I can find. That was one of the reasons I went to Arkaroola, South Australia last Christmas – New Year holidays. I want to see the most isolated observatory in Australia. It was absolutely fantastic journey! Finally I finished with all photos so after the Easter I will start posting them.

Sorry, back to the Arkaroola. This photo was made about 45 minutes or 1 hour after sunset. The horizon was still quite bright. I did some light painting session and highlighted the observatory and foreground with powerful torch. I also did star trails photo there – will show it a little bit later.

This photo combines two techniques – night photography and light painting. For those of you who interested in night photography and light painting I can recommend Brent Pearson’s book “Night Photography and Light Painting”. I bought it recently and I must say that it’s a great book with detailed tools and technique explanations, step-by-step instructions etc. Even if you already know that subject I’m pretty sure you would find something new there. Highly recommended.
