Broulee Bay and Guerilla Bay are bays on the south coast of New South Wales (NSW) between Batemans Bay and Moruya in Eurobodalla Shire, Australia. Batemans Bay (and it's region including Broulee Bay and Guerilla Bay) is the closest seaside town to the city of Canberra, making the town a popular weekend and holiday destination for residents of Australia's National Capital. Guerilla Bay was named for the artillery that once lined the cliffs around Square Head and Observation Point in Batemans Bay in the 1940s. Even though this tiny and sleepy South Coast town seems far removed from trouble, a Japanese submarine slipped into the mouth of nearby Moruya River in 1942 and attacked a fishing trawler, killing three of the crew. Barlings beach located north of Broulee and by the village of Tomakin. This sandy beach is about one kilometre long with shrubbed sand dunes and grassed flats to the interior. It is crescent shaped and features Barlings Island and Long Nose Point to the north and Melville Point to the south. The beach faces south and, therefore, mostly suitable for sunset photography. However the Long Nose Point is very nice for sunrise photography as well. Very nice rock and concrete path goes from the east side of the Barlings beach to the Long Nose Point wich makes twilight photography walks much easier. Along the way from Barlings beach to the Long Nose Point there are a number of rocky coves and a sewage outlet that are ideal for seascape photography. Burrewarra Point is a cape to the north of Broulee and 25 kilometers to the south of Batemans Bay (turn off the coast road for Guerilla Bay a little south of Rosedale). There is a 1.5-km walking trail through banksia and heath to the point and a lighthouse located off Burri Point Road which offers excellent views of the coast from Malua Bay in the north to Montague Island and Mt Dromedary in the south. Burrewarra Point Light was constructed in 1974 as an automated lighthouse which was powered from batteries charged from the mains. In 1984 it was converted to solar power, with battery backup. The light has no lantern. Also can be found at Burrewarra Point are the remains of concrete igloo buildings of No. 17 Radar Station used by the Royal Australian Air Force during World War II. Burrewarra Point, Guerilla Bay and Jimmies Island are excellent places for fishing. Broulee Island has been declared a nature reserve by the National Parks And Wildlife Office. There are coastal banksias, casuarinas, coastal wattles, ruby saltbush, westringias and boobiallas on the cliffs, a grove of muttonwood trees on the heights overlooking the sand bar plus, in the shadier areas, lilli pilli, red olive plum, silkpod vines and sickle fern. Scuba Diving on the South Coast is spectacular with dives including Jimmys Island, Broulee island and Burri Wall. Good shore dives include Mosquito Bay (excellent for a night dive), Barlings Island, Tomakin Headland, Broulee Island and Broulee headland. The NSW South Coast (including Burrewarra Point, Guerilla Bay and Jimmies Island) is known for its great fishing and is ideal for those after snapper, tuna, kingfish, luderick and flathead. It is also a great place to see whales, dolphins and seals in their natural habitat.
