Norah Head, Lighthouse and Soldiers Beach

Central Coast, NSW, Australia

Norah Head, originally known as Bungaree Noragh Point, is a headland on the Central Coast, New South Wales, Australia, close to Toukley, south of Newcastle and north of Sydney.

It, most famous for its lighthouse which stands majestically guarding the Central Coast's eastern coastline and townships. Norah Head Lighthouse, officially opened in 1903, was the last to be built in the classical James Barnet style that had marked the erection of lighthouses throughout the later part of the 19th century in New South Wales. In 1923 the lighthouse was upgraded to a brighter kerosene burner and finally converted to electricity in 1961 and fully automated in 1995. The light flashes once in 15 seconds, and with the focal plane located at 46 m above sea level, it is visible to 27 nautical miles (50 km). At the entrance to Norah Head Lighthouse is a boat anchor which is a memorial for merchant marinas lost in time of war. Near the head, sea battles between the Japanese Navy and Merchant navy ships took place in World War II - two ships (Nimbin and BHP's Iron Chieftain) were sunk and another one was also attacked.

Soldiers Beach, located just south of the Norah Head Lighthouse, is one of the few Central Coast beaches totally untouched by urban development. Soldiers Beach is patrolled throughout the summer months and offers children, adults, surfers and fishermen alike clear waters and rock pools in which to explore and play. Soldiers Beach is a surfers' dream and a swimmers delight. There's plenty of car parking nearby and picnic tables and a small kiosk are also nearby. It also offers some great spots for coastal photography. However the parking near the Soldiers Beach is closed from one hour after sunset till one hour before sunrise, so if you are planning later night photography please make sure you parked on the parking just outside the gates.

The Norah Head tidal rock pool next to the Cabbage Tree harbour is a popular destination for families with young children due to its sheltered location. Cabbage Tree Bay a very popular spot during the summer months.
