Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine in Kyoto is famous for the countless vermilion red Torii gates. The Torii gates are donations from companies, individuals or families and lead up to the main shrine at the top of the hill. Fushimi Inari Shrine is one of Kyoto's landmarks and has been featured in countless movies as backdrop. The most well known movie is Memoirs of a Geisha. A torii is a traditional Japanese gate commonly found at the entry to a Shinto shrine. The basic structure of a torii is two columns that are topped with a horizontal rail. Slightly below the top rail is a second horizontal rail. A Torii Gate is literally a 'place where birds rest'. Torii are traditionally made from wood and are usually painted vermilion red.
