Night at the Okunoin Cemetery
Mount Koya, Wakayama Prefecture, Japan

Mount Koya (Koya-san / Koyasan) is a large temple settlement, a sacred Buddhist retreat and UNESCO World Heritage site in Wakayama Prefecture, Japan to the south of Osaka, where travellers can stay overnight at a temple, experience prayer rituals and discover the area beyond. No visit to Koya is complete until you've had a chance to make your way around Okunoin Cemetery. Okunoin (Oku-no-in) is the site of the mausoleum of Kobo Daishi (also known as Kukai), the founder of Shingon Buddhism and one of the most revered persons in the religious history of Japan. If visiting the Okunoin graveyard with light is interesting, after dawn it becomes one of the most impressive experiences you could have. A night time visit provides a special atmosphere that is quite different from that of a day time visit, but note that some parts of the path are poorly lit. The lamps illuminating the cemetery are now the main light source, and create a mysterious and very photogenic environment.
Any photo in my collection can be made as a stunning black & white print.
