Materials and Sustainability

At Ilya Genkin Photography, we believe in the power of nature - both to inspire and to heal. As landscape photographers, we spend our lives immersed in the natural world, and we know just how precious and fragile it is. That's why we're deeply committed to sustainability and environmental responsibility across every aspect of our business.

From the materials we use to the way we package your order, we carefully consider the impact of our actions - because preserving the planet is just as important as capturing its beauty.

Our Sustainable Practices

Made-to-Order Model

We operate on a made-to-order basis, meaning every print is produced only when ordered. This approach eliminates overproduction and reduces waste, energy use, and storage emissions. It also allows us to deliver high-quality artwork without contributing to unnecessary environmental impact.

Sustainable Materials

We operate on a made-to-order basis, meaning every print is produced only when ordered. This approach eliminates overproduction and reduces waste, energy use, and storage emissions. It also allows us to deliver high-quality artwork without contributing to unnecessary environmental impact.

  • Fine Art Paper - We print on 300GSM 100% cotton rag paper - a museum-grade stock made from recycled textile industry by-products. It contains no tree fibres, and its production has a low environmental footprint.
  • Timber Frames - All frames are handcrafted in Australia from FSC-certified wood. The FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification ensures the highest standards for forest conservation and includes consultation with local Indigenous communities. Our custom frames use 100% reclaimed timber, adding a unique character while reducing demand on natural resources.
  • Glazing and Mounting - We use 3mm plexiglass - a museum-grade, shatterproof, and UV-resistant alternative to traditional glass. While we still use some foam core for mounting, we're actively researching more sustainable alternatives and eliminating waste wherever possible.

Packaging That Cares

Packaging plays a critical role in our sustainability goals. We aim to reduce waste while ensuring your prints arrive safely.

  • Eco-Friendly Wrap - We use Polycell EcoPure, a biodegradable alternative to traditional bubble wrap, which breaks down in landfill conditions.
  • Recycled Cartons - Our shipping cartons are made from 3BC stock with 77% recycled content and FSC-certified kraft fibres sourced from regional Victoria and NSW.
  • Reused Materials - Wherever possible, we reuse cardboard boxes and other materials to reduce single-use waste.

Supporting Local and Ethical Production

All printing and framing is done locally in Australia. Our production partners employ skilled craftspeople under fair and safe conditions, supporting both the local economy and Australian artists. We even looked into whether the warehouse coffee pods were reusable and sustainably sourced - and we're proud to say they are.

Everyday Sustainability

Beyond our prints and packaging, we incorporate sustainability into our daily operations. We compost paper waste, recycle materials, and reuse wherever possible. Our studio garden thrives on composted materials, and the fresh produce is shared with the local community - closing the loop in small but meaningful ways.

A Work in Progress

We understand that sustainability is a journey, not a destination. While we're proud of the progress we've made, we know there's always more to learn and improve. If you have suggestions or ideas on how we can do better, we'd love to hear from you.

Together, we can celebrate the beauty of nature - and do our part to protect it for future generations.
