Mount Buffalo National Park

Australian Alps, Victoria, Australia

Mount Buffalo is a mountain plateau in Victoria (Australia), 200 km northeast of Melbourne. It is one of the oldest parks in the Australian Alps, being first established in 1898 when 1165 ha was reserved around Eurobin Falls. In 1908 it was expanded and the park now covers the plateau and foothills of Mount Buffalo.

Mount Buffalo is a moderately tall mountain plateau on the west side of the Victoria Alpine region. The top of the mountain has striking granite boulders and rock formations. From the north, the mountain is quite remarkable, with the highest accessible point being a prominent peak called The Horn.

The Horn is the most prominent peak on the Mount Buffalo plateau. The Horn has an elevation of 1,723 metres (5,653 ft). The top of the mountain has striking granite boulders and rock formations and from the north the mountain is quite remarkable. A walking track leads to The Horn and visitors can enjoy a 360 degree view from the top.

The Cathedral is a large granite outcrop located on the high but flat plateau atop Mount Buffalo. The Cathedral is a very popular place for rock climbing.

Mount Buffalo National Park is an all-seasons park that has sheer cliffs, imposing granite tors, tumbling waterfalls, snow gums and stunning wildflowers. It contains vegetation and fauna adapted to extremes of weather, as a result of its sub-alpine location.

Mount Buffalo National Park is approximately a four-hour trip from Melbourne. Take the Hume Highway towards Wangaratta. Turn off at the Snow Road (Great Alpine Road no. B500), which is 11 kilometres past the two BP service stations on either side of the highway, just outside Glenrowan. Follow the Great Alpine Road to Porepunkah where you will come to a large roundabout. At the roundabout turn right to Mount Buffalo Resort. Chains must be carried during the declared snow season.
