There's something timeless and humbling about the desert. Growing up in Kazakhstan, I was surrounded by vast steppes, deserts, and semidesert landscapes that etched themselves into my memory. So when I first ventured into the Australian Outback, I felt an immediate connection - an emotional familiarity in the red earth, the scorched horizons, and the resilient silence. It reminded me of home, yet offered a unique palette of colours, light, and geological drama that is distinctly Australian.

I've always been drawn to minimalist, elemental places, and few landscapes strip things back to their essence like the desert does. In the film Lawrence of Arabia, the character T.E. Lawrence, played by Peter O'Toole, says he is drawn to the desert "because it's clean." That quote has stayed with me. There is a purity in the desert - the absence of clutter, the clarity of form, the way light dances across sand and stone. It's a place where the land speaks loudly, even in silence.

The Australian Outback is more than just a photographic subject for me; it's a place of emotional and creative inspiration. I was honoured to write a chapter about the Australian Outback for a published book about the natural wonders of the world. In it, I tried to capture the immense scale, the fragile beauty, and the powerful solitude that define this landscape. From the ochre dunes of the Simpson Desert to the surreal formations of the Pinnacles and the endless horizons near Lake Eyre, each location has a story to tell.
